Nursing Units

Acute Care – This is a 46 private bed unit located on the second floor of the north tower, which provides care to adult and pediatric patients with Medical, Surgical and Oncology needs. This includes pre-operative and postoperative care. Our acute care unit is able to deliver extraordinary care to a wide variety of patient populations.

Ambulatory Surgery – This 20-bed unit cares for pre-op surgical patients and outpatient surgical procedures.  This unit has 6483 patients annually.

Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (CPCU) –This spacious 22-bed cardiac unit is located in the DeBakey Heart Institute on the top of the sunny south tower of the hospital. CPCU specializes in cardiovascular care and also houses the Clinical Decision Unit (24hr chest pain observation). CPCU provides care for a wide variety of cardiac diagnosis such as percutaneous interventions, cardiothoracic surgery, CHF and dysarrthymias. CPCU also cares for all stroke patients admitted to HaysMed. HaysMed is an Accredited Chest Pain & PCI Center and a Certified Primary Stroke Center.

Cardiovascular Lab – This 8-bed unit located on the first floor of the Debakey Heart Institute performs 1300 cardiac procedures annually.  These consist of heart caths, cardiac stent placement, ICD’s, pacemakers, cardio versions, and peripheral interventions. Hays Med is a Chest Pain and Stroke Accredited institute.

Joint/Spine Center –  A 10- bed unit primarily for caring for joint replacement and spine surgeries. It is located in the garden level of the south tower. This unit provides pain control and individualized therapies in our spacious rehab gym.  There they have the opportunity to work with Physical and Occupational Therapies.

Med/Surg Intensive Care Unit – This 12-monitored bed unit provides highly specialized care for the critically ill adults.  It is located on the first floor of the Debakey tower on the south side of Hays Med. Nursing services provided include complex surgical, invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular services, stroke and sepsis patients.  Patients are often on mechanical ventilators, are hemodynamically unstable and require high tech therapies and supportive measures. In addition to this, critical care nurses are the driving force behind the Rapid Response Team (RRT).

PACU– The primary function of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit is to promote high quality care to surgical patients. This 11-bed unit provides post operatively care for ambulatory surgery patients, and patients that require hospitalization for general, orthopedic, spine, neurological, urological, ENT, podiatry, dental, endoscopy and gynecological patients.

Pain Clinic – The primary function of the Pain Clinic is to provide pain relief to those patients that suffer from chronic and acute pain.  They provide services including lumbar and cervical injections, trigger point injections and pain consultations.  The clinic see’s patients with a referral from a primary care physician.  This unit cares for 1250 annually.

Surgery – This unit provides care to over 7400 cases annually by nursing members, scrub techs, CRNA’s, anesthesiologists. This department offers cardiac, vascular, plastic, urology, orthopedic, podiatry, ophthalmology, gynecology, dental, ENT, endoscopy, robotics, oral maxillofacial and general surgeries in a 10 surgical suites, 2 endoscopy suites and 2 c-section rooms.
